One of the oldest and best known of all fitness exercises is surely the push up. In today’s hi-tech world it may look and feel out of date but it’s very easy to perform and extremely effective. If bulging pectorals are what you’re after then this is the one for you.
Push ups are an excellent way of exercising and can be performed almost anywhere. The simplest style of push up is carried out lying face down on the floor and using just the arms to raise and lower the body. Push ups are designed to strengthen the triceps, pectorals and to some degree, the deltoids but are great as a good all round way of strengthening the whole body.
If you want to increase the stress on your chest and shoulder muscles try press ups. These are a variation of push ups used by athletes and the military. Press ups are carried out with the legs and back held straight and off the floor. If you’re doing these at home, try putting your feet on an armchair or low stool. If you’re out in the park, use a bench to rest your feet upon. Try not to raise your legs above shoulder line height.
There are various other adaptations of the push up including using just the four fingers of each hand, using just the one hand, clapping the hands (this needs extra strong pushes to lift the body even higher than normal), or pressing against a wall rather than the floor – the further your feet from the wall, the tougher the exercise is. Be careful not to injure yourself if trying some of the more extreme versions.
If you’re overweight and trying to get your body into shape, don’t avoid push ups. They can teach you a lot about carrying your own body weight.

Occupying the periods between mid 30’s and mid 60’s, the middle adult years is where the famed “mid life crisis” often occurs. The unmet needs of childhood and adolescence finally rear their head and demand satisfaction. The mid life crisis is often referred to as “the second adolescence.” It is a period of reclaiming lost or undeveloped identity. It can be a radical period of transformation causing a great deal of upheaval in an established family. Separation, divorce, remarriage and blended families are not uncommon in this stage. Career change is likely. In today’s world more and more woman are now experiencing the freedom to question their needs and choices; they are having their own mid life crisis, adjusting their role in the family and embarking on careers of their own.
The traditional middle adult is generally established in his or her career. Choices as to “what do I want to be when I grow up” are no longer entertained. Work energy now is channeled towards productivity and longevity. The middle adult may be engaged in various community activities, service organizations or as a board member for social agencies.
The primary developmental need of middle adulthood is geared towards the family and the community. The father is the provider and the mother is the homemaker. Each has their own defined rules and roles. In today’s world, these roles have shifted and become somewhat blurred with dual family incomes and blended families. Some keywords that characterize this stage would be “caring,” “giving,” “helping,” and “community.” Personal needs are beginning to shift away from one’s own psychological development and towards the welfare of others. This is a shift towards the satisfaction of social/spiritual needs.
To help meet the needs of middle adulthood a person can:
· Recognize the shift in emphasis towards giving back, caring for others, productivity and the growing need to acknowledge the spiritual part of your being.
· If you find yourself in a midlife identity crisis, you can greatly benefit by seeing a professional counselor to help clarify the issues and provide objective feedback. No counselor worth his or her credentials will tell you what to do. A successful passage through a midlife crisis is dependent on difficult, personal, individual decisions.
· If your identity is relatively intact, accept who you have become and the limitations of that self. At this stage of life, options are less but momentum is greater. Utilize the training, education and experience accumulated to move you forward.
· Contribute to your family and your community, these are the major needs during this developmental stage. But, be careful not to overextend yourself in an attempt to compensate for shortcomings.
Adults in this phase of the journey who fail to meet the developmental needs of this stage could easily find themselves burned out, stagnating, self-absorbed and cynical.
The long haul through middle adulthood yields the golden years which can prove to be extremely rewarding.

The Amazing History of the Italian Flag
The symbolism behind the Italian flag is altruistic, the green stands for hope, the white for faith, and red for charity. These are all virtues of a truly “good” human being, and they are virtues that Italy proudly strives for.
This flag first represented the Cisalpine Republic at Modena in 1797. The Italian constitution was created by the Austrian “Hapsburgs,” and based in large part on the French constitution. By 1805, when Napoleon I took control over the kingdom of Northern Italy, the Tri-Color flag was what represented this domain. Under Napoleon’s rule, and under Pope Pius VII, the fifteen states were united into three areas.
However, barely ten years later, this unity ended at the 1815 Conference at Vienna, when the country was split into nine states. Outside forces were a constant influence upon the turmoil and divisiveness within the country.
However, in 1848, King Carlo Alberto finally led Nationalist forces to free Italy of these forces, and the tri-color flag was once again adopted as the national flag. King Alberto included his royal arms, including his black eagle shield, on the flag. By 1860, the entire country was under the control of King Alberto’s son, King Vittorio Emmanuele I.
In 1870, France was invaded by the Prussians, and Napoleon III withdrew completely from Italy. King Emmanuele II took advantage of this departure and took over the city of Rome, and it became the capital city.
Finally, many years later, in June 1946 just after WWII ended, Italy became a Republic and the nation’s flag returned to its original tri-color design, void of any coat of arms or crown – signifying a free and liberated Republic.
