Pregnant women are forever anxious about the growth of their baby. They try various means to keep a tab on the development of their fetus. A typical pregnancy calculation is 40 weeks from the starting date of your last period. This automatically transforms into a rough figure of ten months, although most babies are delivered any time after the beginning of the ninth month.
You can make use of the pregnancy calendar to make notes on the changes in your body at different stages of pregnancy.
Month 1
This is the time when conception takes place. During this period, the egg is fertilized by the sperm and gradually reaches the uterus.
Month 2
The baby’s heart starts beating and it develops arms and legs. The heart even starts circulating blood to the baby’s body. The primordial of the liver, pancreas, lungs, and stomach are evident in this stage of the pregnancy calendar.
Month 3
The baby starts moving around, although you may not be able to feel the movement as yet. Formation of toes begins and the baby will move away by touching the uterine wall. The external genitalia are now differentiated; the external ears and the upper lip are fully formed.
Month 4
You can now start feeling the baby around. At an ultrasound screening, you can even see how it sucks its thumb. All his twenty teeth have formed and are starting to grow by now. The scalp hair pattern is developing and the heart is pumping about 25 quarts of blood a day.
Month 5
During this period, the pads of the fingers and toes are formed and the fingerprints are developing. Gradually, permanent teeth buds are forming behind the already-formed milk teeth buds.
Month 6
According to the pregnancy calendar, this is the stage when fat deposits tend to build upon the baby’s body. It weighs up to 283 g and measures about 25 cm by this time. Towards the end of this trimester, the baby might begin to settle in a head down position.
Month 7
As the third trimester sets in, the baby starts hearing noises from the outside world. The veins are visible through the skin, and now it can hear you and those around you. In fact, you may even feel it jump at a sudden noise. Your uterus also allows the baby to see some light so as to make him aware of lightness and darkness.
Month 8
By this time, your baby’s eyes start to move. The head grows in size and almost all the internal organs are fully developed. In this stage, the baby is capable of regulating his own temperature even as the bone marrow starts producing red blood cells. It is urinating about a half liter of urine into the amniotic fluid everyday. This pregnancy stage is a period of high activity as your little one’s sleep cycles become more prominent.
Month 9
During the 35th week, the baby weighs about 2.15 kilos. The growth continues as your baby snuggles down into your pelvis. This will relieve you of the breathlessness that you have been feeling in the previous month. However, with increased pressure on your uterus and pelvis, you will have to urinate more often.
Month 10
The lungs of your baby are ready to breathe all by themselves during this stage. You can give birth to your baby any time now. Maximum deliveries take place in the 36th or 37th week of pregnancy. The onset of labor is usually marked by water breaking, increased contractions, and dilation of the cervix.

The decision to breastfeed or formula feed your new baby is a very personal one, and will depend on your circumstances.
The general consensus is that ‘breast is best’, but of course this is not always possible for a variety of reasons.
Here are some points you may wish to consider to help you decide which is best for you and your new baby.
Formula Milk:
Formula milk is higher in protein content, but the protein found in breast milk has a higher digestibility and assimilation, and therefore less is required.
Breast Milk:
Breast milk has a higher carbohydrate content.
Breast milk contains Bifidus factor – beneficial bacteria to help with the baby’s immune system.
Bifidus factor discourages the growth of pathogenic organisms.
Breast milk in the first few days contains colostrum, which contains all the necessary immune factors, plus growth factors and a variety of vitamins and minerals.
Colostrum can fight and remove bacterial invaders in the intestinal tract and is good for the lungs, throat and intestines.
Did You Know?
Every new-born baby has a ‘leaky gut’. This is natural and is as nature intended.
In time, this gut must ‘heal’, or become less leaky. If it does not heal, then undigested proteins can cross the gut and cause allergic reactions. Normally this is not a problem, because one of the ingredients naturally found in breastmilk (Secretory Immunoglobulin-A, or sIgA for short) helps to seal the leakiness, or permeability.
This is one of the reasons why breast milk helps the baby develop a healthy immune system.
If the naturally leaky gut in the new-born is not ‘healed’ (which happens naturally with breastfeeding), then the proteins from cows milk may cross the leaky gut and set up an immune reaction. This is why so many babies do better on breast milk.
Other important benefits of breastmilk are:
It has been shown that babies or children who are fed cows milk too early can develop Type 1 diabetes.
Breast milk has a laxative effect, which encourages the passage of first bowel movements, preventing newborn jaundice.
Formula fed babies usually have harder and more odorous stools than breast fed babies.
The minerals from breast milk are better absorbed than minerals in formula milk. The unabsorbed portions of minerals can change the balance of bacteria in the newborn’s gut, which creates greater opportunity for dysbiosis (imbalance of bacteria).
Studies:
Twenty different studies, including two controlled trials, suggest several advantages of longer-term exclusive breast feeding. When babies were fed exclusively with breast milk for six months (i.e. no solids or liquids besides human milk, other than vitamins and medications), they had a lower risk of gastrointestinal infection than those who were exclusively breastfed for only three to four months. The mothers lost their maternal weight more readily after the birth and delayed the return of menstrual periods with the longer breastfeeding period. There were no adverse effects on the baby’s growth, although in developing countries there was some incidence of reduced iron levels.
A study carried out at the Institute of Child Health in London found that babies who received a “low nutrient” diet rather than a “nutrient rich” diet in their first days were healthier as adolescents. This may be of some comfort to mothers who usually produce very small amounts of milk in the first few days after birth. Perhaps nature knows what it’s doing?

Big changes are coming in your baby’s eighth month of life. By now, he or she has made a lot of big changes. They are moving around, making noises, and exploring everything with their mouth. What’s more, they can recognize you and really take in their surroundings, since their vision is working at its best. So, get ready to start chasing after that baby.
Since Junior is crawling around, you have to keep a good eye on him. When baby’s crawl, they encounter new objects. This could mean they’ll find things you don’t want them to get into. And everything they find is going to be put straight into their mouth, which is not always what you want to happen. Small, sharp objects can be dangerous, so just keep an eye out.
Also, since your infant is mobile, corners and other rough objects may hurt them. This doesn’t mean you have to pad every corner in your house; your child won’t break if they bump into a table leg. However, be prepared to comfort your child if that happens. Be happy so they don’t feel like they have to cry. And do baby-proof some things, like electrical sockets, for instance.
By now, your child is probably also teething. This process happens between six and twelve months of age. If you see your baby drooling a lot or crying for no reason, this may be a sign of teething. Plus, when excess saliva is present, it can cause a rash or diarrhea. When you start to see these signs, it’s time to help your baby out. Cold, hard teething rings can help numb the pain; if your doctor OK’s it, you can also try acetaminophen.
Another fun thing to deal with is your baby’s growing personality. He or she is probably starting to make certain gestures or sounds for specific wants or needs, like raising his arms when he wants picked up. However, he or she might also act up a bit when you are around. By this age, babies start to test their limits. Since they know you always take care of them, they’ll start this process with you. So, if you feel like the babysitter does a better job of calming your kid down, that’s perfectly normal. Children are less likely to act up around less familiar faces.
These phases of acting up and teething will pass. You may not enjoy it at the time, but you’ll look back on the memories fondly.
