Who is the Most Independent Filmmaker Friendly Distributor in 2008? the Answer Might Surprise You

Overall, film sales were down at Sundance 2008. And documentary titles accounted for about half of the distribution deals made this year. However, the real story for deal-making at Sundance may well be that Sony Pictures Classics, the bright-eyed indie wing of the 400 pound gorilla that is Sony Pictures, single handedly kept the festival a viable market for scrappy indie films in competition.

Sony Pictures Classics does not have the success stories of, say, Fox Searchlight Pictures box office bonanza LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. Purchased at Sundance 2006 for a record-breaking $10.5 Million, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE went on to gross close to $100 Million and won 2 Oscars. Smart buy. Smart marketing. In contrast, SPC purchased JUNEBUG at Sundance 2005, which earned next to nothing but did prove to be Amy Adam’s breakout film and earn her an Oscar nomination. SPC’s continued determination to acquire at Sundance is all the more remarkable for its past failures to capture the crossover success that Sundance legend lives one.

Just look at the breakdown of Sundance 2008 deals. Of the 9 feature films, 6 deals were made for distribution in the US. (1 of the deals was by United Artists who purchased the remake rights for the Spanish film TIMECRIMES, but have no plans to distribute.) 2 of those 6 films (HAMLET 2 and HENRY POOLE IS HERE) played in the Premiere selection. So, of the 121 features in competition, 4 found a home, and for 3 of them that home is with the SPC (FROZEN RIVER, BAGHEAD, as well as THE WACKNESS).In many respects, SPC is keeping film acquisition alive at Sundance, choosing to shop the lesser know films and purchasing in quantity (all were had for around 6 or 7 figures), rather than looking for the headline grabbing big money deal. Indeed, I find it quaint and almost touching the way SPC handles Sundance. Its choices seem bracing and risky, even if they may be due to its buying strategy of avoiding bidding wars and looking for asking prices to drop as the fest wears on. Bottm feeders SPC may be, but that does not change the fact that it is willing to court the wallflowers of the festival that nobody else wants to take for a spin, including this year’s Grand Jury Price winner FROZEN RIVER.

On paper this film has nothing going for it. Star power that falls well below your average TV Movie Of The Week (and that’s Network TV); a downer subject that lacks sexy topicality — illegal US border crossings from, wait for it, Canada. It’s a nutty move, as are their two other fest buys. THE WACKNESS got some festival buzz, but nobody was willing to go for the mat for it, perhaps because it clearly doesn’t have a chance of becoming the next LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (although we should never underestimate the nation’s love of the Olsen twin). SPC is making smaller deals for smaller movies to do, probably, small business. I sort of love it; I like the “think small” attitude towards independent film. After all, isn’t that the point, rather than go after the one Indie film that has a chance of crossover success, Sony is taking up a few wild cards and one day, they will make it to a theatre near yearif only for a week. I think if the Independent Spirit Awards had an award for Film Acquisition this year, it should go to SPC. The company’s gamble on niche markets, on the oddball, on the rag-tag underdog has exactly the wild Indie spirit that the most successful Sundance films routinely champion–and that the biggest Sundance deals routinely lack.

A History of Fans With Ideas for Today

Fans actually have a long history that many probably are unaware of. Fans have been used as status symbols, decorative pieces, and cooling devices. In the past fans were made from palm leaves and feathers, with bases of wood, paper, and even chicken skin! Handheld fans were used as communicating tools; certain waves of a fan indicated specific emotions or messages in social circles. As status symbols, fans displayed costly materials and precious materials, displaying an individual’s wealth. Gold, mother of pearl, tortoiseshell, and ivory were used in some fan designs, creating pieces of art in the process. Museums around the world today are dedicated to displaying some of these historic fans and this unique form of art, and handheld fans are still popular in the contemporary world of fashion.

With the discovery of electricity the fan became an automatic motor-powered cooling device, without the tiring of human arms. Large spaces can now be cooled in a very short amount of time. Industrial fans can cool at an extraordinary rate, bringing much needed relief without draining your energy bills.

The first electric fan was invented in the late 1800’s by Philip Diehl, who used a sewing machine’s motor for an electric ceiling fan. It was known as the Diehl Electric Fan. He added his own light kit later on and continued to work on advancements.

From the Great Depression to the sixties, electric fans became less and less popular and less available in America, but by the seventies they were back with a bang for a while.

However, with more cooling advancements, air conditioners reduced fan popularity once again, and with the reduction in popularity came a reduction in research and features. The standard of high class fan motors, blades, and housing were somewhat lost from the nineties through recent years with mass production and the flourishment of modern chainstores.

Turkey: Continuing to Attract Investment Despite the Global Economic Climate

The country’s property market is booming, with prices expected to continue rising over the next five years. New government laws enabling investors from overseas to buy land have contributed partly to the growing interest in the market and, more recently, the strength of the euro means that thrifty holiday makers are looking for destinations where they’ll get more for their pound.

With Mediterranean countries becoming increasingly expensive, it seems as though even the big Spanish developers have a growing interest in what they can achieve in this exciting land of opportunity, which benefits enormously from being outside of the euro zone. It’s not just property investors that expect great things from Turkey either; supermarkets, banks and car manufacturers are all looking for a piece of the action!

Turkish overseas property investment is largely intended for the rental market, which remains strong. Prices in Kalkan – home to a large expatriate community – have accelerated over recent times, with resorts on both the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, such as: Antalya, Alanya, Fethiye, Dalyan, Marmaris, Bodrum, Kusadasi, and Kas, all proving incredibly popular with overseas buyers. Villas, apartments, flats and houses are available to suit a wide range of investment budgets.

Property investors in Turkey will encounter few problems when it comes to attracting tourists either – the country has a thriving tourism industry and no end of activities and interests for visitors who return year after year to take part in anything from paragliding and skydiving, to visiting museums and learning calligraphy…and that’s before they have sampled the Turkish cuisine!

The country’s capital, Ankara is more likely to accommodate business travellers or those with a keen interest in ancient history than holiday makers, who can be found in Istanbul, where they’re able to experience an overlap between European and Asian cultures – market haggling and mystical rugs, followed by designer shops and clubbing.

So, with a flourishing tourism industry, booming property market and effortless access to the country via numerous budget airlines – as well as the appeal to holiday makers of a destination outside of the euro zone – Turkey as an investment opportunity is an increasingly appealing prospect. Indeed, with prices looking likely to continue rising, many reports question whether there has ever been a better time to invest.

 

Prices are currently cheaper than anywhere else in the region and, with the strength of the euro likely to deter UK holiday makers from visiting EU countries, the Turkish property market isn’t showing any signs of slowing. And when the time is right, you pick the grapes and allow them to ferment, and you keep the juices in your cellar for them to age and mature to achieve the wine taste that everybody wants. But even today, away from the lovely suburban places that we usually attach with such settings, people can actually start making their own wines with the help of wine making supplies. What may seem to be an arduous activity is going to be fairly easy for anybody to have fun doing. Here is the world of the wine making supplies that are enclosed in the wine making kits.

The Needed Supplies

Just to get started, here is a run-through of everything that you will need: gallon jug, primary fermenter, large measuring cup, small measuring cup, long-handled plastic spoon, photohydrometer, siphon hose, glass carboy, airlock and rubber bung, large food-grade plastic funnel, and a wine thief. With all of these wine making supplies in your hands, you can have delicious wines at your fingertips.

The Process of Making Wine

Previously, the art of wine making using wine making supplies takes centuries. It is an age old process and will usually require patience to perfect and behold a smooth and deliciously tasting wine. In the modern days, wine making has been facilitated with the help of wine making supplies and equipment. The process begins by selecting perfectly conditioned grapes or any fruit variety of your choice. Then the grapes are crushed collecting the juice in a special container. The crushed grapes will undergo separation while the liquid is being settled prior to the fermentation process, which takes 10 to 30 days. Sugar and yeast are then added to the extracted grape juice in order to begin fermentation, which requires a controlled environment and the proper mixture to prevent oxidation. Temperature should also be at the right level and steps should be done to have the right amount of good and bad yeast in the mixture. After fermentation, which includes the processes of fining, filtration, centrifugation, refrigeration, ion exchange, and heating, the remaining suspended materials in the fermented juice is removed to prevent cloudiness. The grape juice is then aged to improve its taste, aroma, quality, and flavor. Aging likewise enhances clarity of the wine and reduces acidity content. But all these are done easily with the help of wine making supplies.

Infant Potty Training – What’s it REALLY Like? The Truth About This ‘Green’ Baby Hygiene Practice

“I was reading about potty training and there are a lot of people that are “Infant Potty Training” and they hardly use any diapers at all! There’s no way could I be alert 24/7 waiting for that tinkle! Although it must be a very green way to raise a baby. What do you know about Baby Pottying?”

That is a common question on parenting forums, and here’s an answer to this basic question…

What is Infant Potty Training REALLY Like?

Do people stare at their baby all day every day? No. 24 / 7 isn’t the reality!

Infant potty training is a bit of a mis-nomer – simply worded that way to make it at least accessible to those curious about what mothers did before diapers were an option. It is ‘training’ in the sense of guidance, gentle learning and support…

In reality, Infant Potty Training is not about ‘potty training’ and it is nothing like what you do with a toddler who has been trained to pee and poo in their own clothes for several years. (rewards, charts, expecting them to go there and do it all themselves)

‘EC’ or Elimination Communication is a more accurate (if cumbersome) word for it – as it is simply communicating with your baby about their elimination needs. I like the term Baby Pottying. I’ve found it enhances other aspects of our relationship, too – such as supporting breastfeeding and simply having a wider understanding of what might be causing baby distress – needing to go poo!

Often when this concept is first introduced on a forum, a bunch of people jump on board shrieking about it, when in fact they have no experience or idea, and assume people do it slavishly 24 / 7 with no diapers, and do horrible things like forcing babies to go, or holding them on a potty until they go.

No, that isn’t EC at all. It is a gentle, respectful and cooperative process!

What REALLY happens is people gently and lovingly give their baby the opportunity to do their business in a baby potty or special bowl, rather than ONLY allowing them to go in their pants. Perhaps at first only when they are having a diaper change – the diaper is off already…then the diaper GOES BACK ON THE BABY! (Imagine THAT! Would using a diaper between potty visits make it easier? Of course!) Then perhaps when the baby wakes they offer too – as, like us, babies often wake to go…

Babies are going to wee and poo anyway – but you can communicate as a team to ‘catch’ some of that waste and flush it away. That’s the wonderful thing about Baby Pottying – enhancing the relationship with your baby into these new areas. Parents often know more about the natural rhythms of their baby than they realize. Practicing EC simply adds some extra skills – reducing ‘unexplained’ crying – which is REALLY helpful with a tiny little newborn!

Caring For a Premature Baby

A premature baby is defined as any infant that has been born before the 37th week of pregnancy. Full-term babies that have extremely low birth weights can also be classified as being “premmies.” These youngsters often require additional medical care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) immediately after birth. As parents of a premature baby, you should be aware that the child will also need additional care for the first two years of their life upon coming home.

Soon after your baby comes home, you should take him to see his pediatrician so that the doctor can keep a close eye on any weight gain or loss that has occurred. He may also recommend a special feeding program that may include a special formula that is combined with a number of vitamins. These vitamins will help to ensure that your “premmie” remains healthy and can continue to grow at a normal rate in these first few months of development.

The doctor may also recommend that your baby be given iron drops for the first few months. Unlike full-term children, premature babies often suffer from a deficiency in this mineral. By supplementing it in his diet, your baby’s iron levels can be returned to normal levels by the age of four months, at which time the iron treatments can be stopped. However, depending on your child’s particular case, the doctor may advise the supplements to be continued for the first full year of his life.

Feeding schedules for a premature baby may also be more frequent than those of normal infants. Most premature babies need eight to ten feedings a day. While doctors recommend that parents feed normal babies every four hours, premature infants may need to eat more often. Waiting the four hour period may cause these little ones to become dehydrated.

It is also recommended that premature babies should wait to try solid foods until four to six months after their mother’s original due date and not from their actual birth date. As a premature baby’s system is less developed other children of the same age, he may have trouble swallowing and digesting solid foods if they are given to him too early.

Premature children also do not grow as quickly as full-term babies. As they are smaller to begin with, these infants will need additional time to “catch up” to grow to normal size. Usually by the age of two years, these children are often the same size as other toddlers in the same age group.

The physical development of these tiny youngsters may also progress at a much slower rate when compared to full-term babies. These children usually begin to sit up, crawl, and even walk at later ages due to the fact that their muscles and balance is also less developed. Your doctor has a special chart that can let you know if your baby is developing at a normal rate when compared to other premature children.

Premature children need additional care and patience due to their early arrival in the world. By the age of two, you will probably not be able to tell the difference between your youngster and any other two year old. He will be able to run and play and develop into a normal healthy and happy child.
